Abstract

Objective To address the digital divide among low-income older adults, a quality improvement project was developed to enhance digital literacy and promote health autonomy at a subsidized independent living facility in the San Francisco Bay Area. Aim The project aimed to increase resident engagement by 10% and improve confidence in using digital tools for health management. Methods A 5-week structured educational program was implemented, featuring one-hour weekly workshops on accessing telehealth services, managing medications, and tracking health metrics. Pre- and post-class surveys measured engagement and confidence. Results Resident engagement increased by 8.1%, exceeding initial expectations. Thirteen residents participated, with confidence in using technology improving across sessions. By the final session, 100% of attendees reported high confidence. Challenges included inconsistent attendance and the need to adapt workshops to foundational technology skills. Conclusions The program demonstrated that tailored, flexible interventions can address the digital divide, fostering digital literacy and health equity. Future efforts should prioritize sustained engagement through targeted outreach, ongoing rapport-building, and iterative program improvements.
