Abstract
Objective: The absence of standardization at a well-known hospital in the Bay Area has led to the surgical department facing significant challenges with supply management systems and team communication. The inconsistencies in supply stocking and placement on the pediatric C-lockers have caused confusion and frustration among staff, resulting in excessive medical waste, delays in patient care, and disruptions in workflow. Healthcare waste products make up the second-largest portion of all landfills in the United States (U.S.), with operating rooms (OR) contributing 20% to 70% of the medical waste (Bravo et al., 2023). AIM: The project aims to educate 80% of anesthesia technicians regarding proper pediatric C-locker stock management techniques by utilizing the standardized checklist and handoff tool to reduce waste and patient care delays after three months of implementation, striving for improved workflow, collaboration, and overall staff satisfaction. Method: The surgical microsystem was assessed through a number of systems analysis techniques including the Six Sigma, Five P’s microsystem assessment, fishbone root cause analysis, SWOT analysis, and cost-benefit analysis. Interventions: Interviews, observations, and literature review of evidence-based practices were conducted to help develop a standardized checklist and a CHAT handoff report for the unit. Measure: An eight-questionnaire survey served as the primary technique for measuring response rates compared to the total number of educated staff. Results. Due to time constraints, the team could not measure the effectiveness of the project post-implementation. However, 81.25% of the technicians were trained on the purpose and proper use of the tools. Conclusion. Implementation of standardization and handoff reports will promote continuous education for technicians and help the unit improve coordination and be more cost-effective, ultimately lowering healthcare expenses for both the hospital and patients.
