Abstract

Multilateralism’s significance in tackling world challenges is undeniable. Its contribution post-cold war in fostering international cooperation and preventing any major war after two disastrous world wars clearly depicts the potential it holds in maintaining world stability. In addition, the rapid globalization and further digitalization resulted into the rise in shared challenges and thus stimulated the relevancy of multilateral interactions between nations in contemporary world. However, the relentless resurgence of great powers competition for influence in international affairs have made it difficult for the phenomenon to continue smoothly. Enduring rivalries between present world powers such as China, America and Russia have casted a long shadow over the proficiency of the system with creation of considerable challenges and opportunities. These challenges are being intensified with the rise in extent of rivalry and therefore the paper provides a critical evaluation of the elements contributing in consolidating this enmity intercourse between leading states. The paper discusses the failure in implementation of the Paris Climate Treaty, Syrian civil war prompted by major state antagonistic relations and struggles of several of the multilateral institutions such as SAARC and United Nations in Ukraine and Kashmir. Conversely, article also delves into the opportunities for multilateralism including cooperation, conflict management and innovative solutions for the global problems. In addition, the research in end underscores a range of recommendations and feasible solutions can provide assistance in combatting these challenges. Lastly, the factors creating profound impact on multilateralism are numerous with long history but this study is specifically limited to the challenges instigating from the disputes and struggling relations between major states since cold war.
