Abstract

For the closing keynote of this spring's Davies Forum, Making Sense of a Post-Western World: Interdisciplinary Tools, Global Perspectives, we welcome Dr. Arlene Tickner who will speak to Latin American sites of transformative knowledge(s). Tickner will focus on liberation thinking, and indigenous and Afro relational knowledges, examining how the former pursue knowledge building “with” and “for” marginalized peoples, not “on” them, while the latter engage ancestral peoples’ particular ways of being in and with the cosmos, other humans and non-human beings. These unsettling ways of knowing, Tickner argues, offer alternative optics from which to observe and understand global problems, and thus to decenter and decolonize academic practice.

Arlene B. Tickner is a Professor of International, Political and Urban Studies at Universidad del Rosario in Bogotá, Colombia. Her work has transformed the way we think about and teach International Relations by foregrounding perspectives from the global south, especially Latin America. Her extensive publications include the recent textbook, International Relations from the Global South: Worlds of Difference (edited w/Karen Smith). She also writes a weekly newspaper column in the Colombian daily, El Espectador.
