Abstract
Problem Older adults often need a foundational understanding of technological use and how it may be utilized to enhance health promotion. Facility A needs to have a technology program to help residents learn and build upon technology use skills. Research suggests that a continuous technological program with continual support for participants can result in increased long-term use of technology which ultimately helps older adults live more independently with a higher quality of life. To address the problem at Facility A, a technology educational program with a focus on health promotion will be implemented to increase technology use and resident engagement. Aim This quality improvement project aims to increase resident engagement by 10%, raising it from 4.4% to 4.8%, during a 5-week period from September 16, 2024 to November 13, 2024. Methods The proposed intervention for this project is to provide a one-hour educational workshop focused on technology and health promotion to increase resident engagement in facility A. Confidence levels will also be measured throughout the project in order to assess the effectiveness of the education being provided. Data will be collected through the use of short pre and post-class surveys to track engagement and measure changes in confidence levels. Results The data revealed that by the end of the program, there was a resident engagement of 8.1%. Engagement was not consistent throughout the 12-week program however there was an increase in participant’s confidence levels after each workshop. Conclusion Although resident engagement was not overall consistent, there was an increase in engagement as the program progressed and rapport was built with residents. Human engagement was a crucial part of the program as older adults need additional assistance to feel confident and be willing to engage in learning new skills.
