Author Bio
Gustavo Esteva is a grassroots activist and a public, deprofessionalized intellectual from Mexico. He is one of the leading advocates for “post-development,” and the reclaiming of learning, instead of education, as a site for resistance and liberation. He was one of many advisors to the Zapatista Army for National Liberation (EZLN) in Chiapas in their negotiations with the government in 1995/1996. In 1999, Dr. Esteva founded the Universidad de la Tierra in Oaxaca, Mexico, a radical re-imagining of a community-based organization of knowledge sharing and production rooted in the experiences of indigenous peoples’ ways of knowing.
