Abstract

Background: Latine adults receiving HIV and sexual health services often experience overlapping substance use, mental health needs, language barriers, and challenges with linkage to care. Standardized bilingual screening and brief intervention may support earlier identification and culturally responsive care. Local Problem: At a Latine HIV sexual health services clinic in San Francisco, substance use and mental health concerns were addressed during intake, but a validated substance use screening process and linked brief intervention process were not consistently integrated into the workflow. Methods: Fourteen community health workers, peer health educators, and social workers participated. Paper surveys and five-item quizzes measured understanding, self-efficacy, and workflow feasibility. Matched responses were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Interventions: Participants completed a two-hour training on the World Health Organization Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test, substance specific scoring, brief motivational interviewing, documentation, referral, and partner role-play. Results: Eight participants completed matched surveys, and eight completed matched quizzes. Mean knowledge scores increased from 3.88 to 4.63 out of 5, and mean confidence scores increased from 3.50 to 4.31. Mean workflow feasibility decreased slightly from 3.75 to 3.63. Staff recommended bilingual scripts, client-friendly language, additional practice, and clearer referral contacts. Conclusions: The training improved staff knowledge and confidence and supported more consistent substance use screening and brief intervention. Future improvements should emphasize workflow feasibility, bilingual support, and sustainable referral pathways.
