Abstract

Background: Although sexual and reproductive health (SRH) education is a critical component of early health literacy and health promotion, educators remain underprepared to deliver this education. Local Problem: A gap analysis conducted at School A, a public elementary school in the San Francisco Bay Area, revealed the absence of a SRH curriculum for their fifth graders. Methods: A Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) student-led quality improvement project to introduce a SRH educator toolkit to increase educator confidence and self-efficacy was conducted at School A among fifth grade teachers. Pre- and post-intervention data were collected on implementation day to evaluate the impact of this toolkit on educator confidence and self-efficacy. Results: Mean scores increased from 30 to 33.5, showing an 11.67% increase. While findings were not statistically significant (p = 0.39), the small sample size (n=2) limits statistical power. Findings suggest a positive trend in educator confidence and self-efficacy. Qualitative feedback showed themes of increased confidence and valuable content, but identified barriers due to feasibility, highlighting the need for more streamlined materials. Conclusions: The SRH educator toolkit is a start to improving educator confidence and self-efficacy in teaching SRH. Improvements to the toolkit’s usability and implementation support are recommended to optimize feasibility and sustainability.
