Abstract

The theme of this project is risk reduction and the aim is to decrease the number of respiratory/influenza outbreaks (RIOBs) in long term care facilities (LTCFs) in the Local County. The Local County had 29 reported RIOBs during the 2016-2017 influenza season. The goal is to decrease the number of reports to less than 25 reports in the 2017-2018 influenza season. The rationale is to reduce RIOB associated costs and mortality rates. This will be done by implementing educational seminars at pre-determined at-risk LTCFs. The purpose of the education will be how to prevent RIOBs from occurring in LTCFs. The expected outcome will be a decrease in the number of RIOBs in the Local County, increased influenza immunization rates among LTCF staff and patients, and decrease in LTCF patient hospital visits. In the future, this process can also be implemented for gastrointestinal outbreaks and rash outbreaks. In addition, different organization’s nurses and providers and counties can utilize the evidence-based process accordingly to fit their specific needs within their microsystem.
