Abstract
The purpose of this presentation is to improve the communication between departments involved in the “step-up” process. An improved level of communication is measured with the amount of time it takes to get patient from outpatient lobby to inpatient unit bed. This process begins when a patient is placed on a legal hold because they are a danger to themselves, danger to others or gravely disabled. The problem is that the current process takes up to an hour and varies heavily on whether or not the unit charge nurse and the admissions and records agent are properly trained and knowledgeable in their roles for the step up process. There is no current official policy and procedure for a “step up process” which leads to debate on the roles nurses play in A&R, Inpatient Unit and Outpatient Clinic. The intention of this presentation is to present a new policy and procedure that streamlines the process in a way in which all departments are in agreement to the responsibilities and tasks required so that the work is evenly distributed to their abilities and leads to a target time of 30 minutes.
