Abstract
Objective: Malignant Hyperthermia (MH) a rare but life-threatening emergency that requires rapid recognition and intervention. Because MH events occur infrequently, nurses may have limited opportunities to practice responding to an MH crisis. Evidence supports simulation-based education as an interactive method to reinforce knowledge, teamwork, and emergency preparedness. Aim: This quality improvement project aimed to improve experienced nurses’ confidence in recognizing and responding to pediatric MH emergencies through participation in an MH escape room simulation. Methods: The project was implemented with experienced registered nurses in the Pre-Operative and Post-Anesthesia Care Units at a Bay Area hospital. Participants completed an interactive escape room involving recognition of MH signs and symptoms, locating the MH cart, dantrolene preparation and administration, and team communication. Pre- and post-intervention surveys using a 5-point Likert scale measured nurses’ confidence in MH recognition, pediatric MH care, MH cart readiness, and dantrolene administration. Results: Of 54 nurses, 88.9% (48) reported increased confidence following the simulation, 9.3% reported no change, and 1.9% reported decreased confidence. The greatest improvement was seen in confidence with preparing and administering dantrolene during an MH event. Conclusions: The MH escape room improved nurses’ confidence and provided an interactive approach to strengthening preparedness for pediatric MH emergencies.
