Abstract
Background: Individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) often face persistent barriers to healthcare, which include complex health conditions, persistent health disparities driven by social determinants, insufficient provider training, widespread stigma, and significant communication barriers. While previous studies highlight systemic issues, they often overlook the lived experiences of both patients and providers. Purpose: This paper outlines a mixed-methods study, guided by the theory of planned behavior (TPB) to examine how attitudes, social norms, perceived behavioral control, and past healthcare experiences relate to behavioral intentions—specifically, the intention to attend future healthcare visits among adults with IDD and the intention to provide and learn inclusive care among healthcare providers. Methods: Surveys, measuring TPB constructs and past healthcare experiences, will be administered to 50 adults with IDD and 50 healthcare providers in the San Francisco Bay Area. One-on-one interviews with 15 participants from each group will further examine communication challenges and care delivery. Quantitative data will be analyzed using Spearman’s correlation and multiple linear regression, while qualitative data will be thematically analyzed. Implications: Findings aim to inform inclusive training, practice, and policy improvements in healthcare for individuals with IDD.
