Abstract

Key aspects of the literature review included the need for structured disaster preparedness education in nursing, including disaster drills and simulations. The studies in the literature review found that effective education models incorporate simulation, hands-on training, and theory-based approaches, as well as integration with national standards. The literature review also emphasized the importance of addressing educational gaps and supports the use of virtual simulations and collaborations to enhance learning. The current educational curriculum in the public health nursing rotation does not thoroughly align with the American Association of College Nursing (AACN) Essentials, specifically those related to disaster preparedness, creating a significant gap in nursing education. There is an approximate 20% gap in the current educational curriculum that does not align with the AACN Essentials. In this study, a narrative literature review method was employed to gather, analyze, and synthesize existing research on disaster training in nursing education. This approach involved a structured search of relevant academic databases using predefined keywords, followed by screening studies based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. The aim was to identify patterns, gaps, and consensus in the current body of knowledge to provide a comprehensive understanding of disaster preparedness training in nursing education curricula. (Who or what identified the gap) A gap of 20% or greater was identified in the current educational curriculum after comparing the current AACN essentials with the current public health education curriculum. Implications for this study include a refined and improved educational curriculum for the public health nursing rotation that closely aligns with the current AACN Essentials.
