Abstract
Abstract
Background Effective patient-centered communication (PCC) during bedside shift reports (BSR) is crucial in peripartum care, where patients face physical recovery and emotional adjustment. However, communication gaps during transitions from labor and delivery (L&D) to postpartum (PP) units can lead to patient dissatisfaction and misinterpretation of care instructions. Hospital A, an urban tertiary care medical center in San Francisco, operates a peripartum mesosystem across two floors with 35 dedicated beds. Aim The project aims to increase patient satisfaction by implementing patient-centered language in bedside reports for peripartum units from 70% to 80% for a three-week period. Methods Stakeholder engagement, a literature review, and mesosystem analysis identified barriers to incorporating PCC into BSR. A Patient-Centered Language Guide was developed and distributed to nurses with accompanying staff education. Due to delays in approval for the Research Determination Outcome (RDO) and the patient satisfaction survey, the focus shifted to evaluating nurses’ understanding and application of PCC. Results Feedback from 29 L&D and PP nurses revealed that 86.2% strongly agreed PCC fosters trust between nurses and patients. Despite challenges like time constraints and varying communication needs, nurses supported the guide’s role in improving communication. Conclusion Educating nurses on PCC enhances their understanding, strengthens trust, and improves communication during BSR in peripartum units. Addressing barriers like time constraints and workflow integration can ensure sustained improvements in care delivery.
