Abstract
Problem Engagement in educational workshops is important for older adults as it provides spaces to connect, learn, and continue independent living. Aim This quality improvement project aimed to increase resident engagement by 10%, raising it from 4.4% to 4.8%, during a 5-week period from October 16, 2024 to November 13, 2024. Methods A 5P Microsystem Assessment, in partnership with key stakeholders, recognized small numbers of resident engagement in educational-related programs produced by the staff. Master of Nursing (MSN) students conducted a survey to assess needs in the community, upon reviewing the survey, there was an educational interest and thus the benchmark data for resident engagement. MSN students produced education workshops for Independent Living Facility A in hopes of increasing the engagement of residents. A SWOT analysis and cause-and-effect analysis were conducted to identify the key factors contributing to the lack of participation and engagement. Subsequently, a lesson plan was developed, and a PDSA cycle was implemented to assess the change of the proposed intervention. Results The pre- and post-class survey monitored participant’s engagement and confidence levels. By the end of the 5 weeks, there was an 8.1% increase in residential engagement. It was concluded that the resident engagement was not consistent throughout the 5-week program, however, there was an increase in residents’ confidence levels after each and every program. Conclusion Although it may seem as though resident engagement did not increase at each session, there was an increase in engagement as a whole as the program moved further on and trust was built with residents. The noticeable increase in resident engagement, as trust and rapport were built, highlights the importance of creating spaces for consistent support and gatherings amongst staff and residents.
