Abstract

Problem: This quality improvement project aimed to overcome the challenges and limitations associated with implementation of a new electronic health record, PointClickCare (PCC). The population of focus was 33 Certified Nurse Assistants (CNAs) employed at a Residential Care Facility (RSF).

Context: After completion of a SWOT analysis, it was determined that the development of a training program would prepare and support the staff for the PCC Go-Live date scheduled on November 1, 2023. The SWOT analysis identified factors that presented as barriers to successful implementation of PCC, including limited familiarity with technology, language barriers, and insufficient equipment for charting. The method used to guide this project was Lewin’s change model: unfreeze, change, and refreeze. Distribution of a readiness assessment provided insight on the needs of the staff and facilitated a detailed training schedule to capture all the CNAs that will be using PCC.

Interventions: To better support the staff, the USF internship team learned to utilize PCC and created step-by-step training materials to be provided during the one-on-one training sessions.

Measures: The Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) was used to measure adherence to PCC implementation and staff satisfaction. Post-implementation surveys were scheduled to be distributed 30 days after the training program, however due to the restricted time frame an evaluation was not performed.

Results: Although time constraints interfered with the evaluation process, positive verbal feedback was provided on the benefits received from the one-on-one training sessions. We anticipate that after 30 days of PCC adoption, the staff will feel more confident and comfortable using PCC compared to not having the provided training.

Recommendations: Distributing a post-implementation survey is recommended 30 days after the training to analyze and evaluate staff satisfaction and the implementation progress of PointClickCare.
