Abstract

P.’s L.L.C. is a Northern California care facility company consisting of six facilities within the bay area with their largest facility able to house 54 residents at a time. Four of the six facilities are focused on memory and Dementia care and there are plans to open a larger facility exclusively for these patients. Based on the state’s criteria, this new facility will be able to charge a higher housing and care fee compared to their other facilities and will prioritize employing their facility with more competent caregivers.

Given the travelers brought in to help with COVID-19 crisis and the hopes of employing more staff, a need for standardized, available and frequent training for caregivers of this patient population has emerged. Considering the presence of new caregiver faces, patients wanting to leave their rooms during quarantine and the need for meticulous infection control during these times, an increased strain has been placed on caregivers and their obligation to keep patients safe (Aud, 2004). In addition to staff training, further safety measures are needed to prevent safety risks, like exiting and elopement, especially when staff are overwhelmed. For this reason, an auditory barrier and caregiver education will be implemented and evaluated for its usefulness in preventing exiting and elopement, as well as falls and aggressive behavior.
