Understanding Pragmatics Through the Use of Comedy

Abstract

L2 learners have many difficulties when learning a second language. Many of their challenges differ from L1. So, the way we are instructing L2 learners need to be unique. There are many methods that are being implemented in the way we teach L2 learners. One teaching method that we can employ is introducing funny stories in the classroom. It is common to utilize stories in lesson plans. So, why not make it funny? Pragmatics and Gricean Maxims can be taught through the use of comedy. In order to understand pragmatics it is necessary to introduce semantics, idioms and speech acts. By including comedy students may feel at ease and want to participant in activities and may bring lively conversation to the classroom.
